Green below zero is south — the door that lets solar wind into Earth’s magnetic field. A dip only starts to count once that stretch of the line reaches the gold Earth mark; until then it is still on its way. The deeper the green goes, and the longer it holds as it arrives, the more energy can pour into the atmosphere and feed the aurora. In Iceland that is a bonus, not a requirement.
